What to do in an emergency

What to do in case of a fire emergency on campus

  • Raise the alarm & immediately call CPU EMERGENCY NUMBER 8999 - no matter how small the fire.

RU Emergency Contact Numbers: List of emergency numbers for your noticeboard - add names of contacts in your building.

  • In residences, inform the Warden or any other authorised person on duty as soon as possible.

  • Follow the building evacuation procedure (see below) and try check that everyone is out the building.

  • Only attempt to extinguish the fire if you can do so without endangering yourself.

Responsibilities:

Managers or heads of department (or their designees) are responsible for ensuring the following are addressed in their areas: 

  • Emergency Evacuation Plan of Action GENERIC‌: use template to create building-specific plan.

  • Fire: detailed information on fire safety and prevention, emergency evacuation, etc.   

  • RU First Aiders: contact details of all RU first aiders.

  • Incidents: procedures to follow in the event of an incident or accident.

  • Standing Instructions for Staff & Students: simple instructions on what to do in the event of a major emergency or crisis on campus.

Senior Management is responsible for planning and devising a coherent strategy for the university as a whole:

  • RU Emergency Management Plan: a framework for senior management and operational staff to coordinate efforts with regard to major emergencies and crises

Emergency Numbers:

The new Rhodes University PBX system treats the following as emergency numbers – these numbers are not barred, and can be dialled from any phone on campus.

On-campus emergencies: 8999  = CPU 24-hour Emergency Line

(save this number on cell phones and emergency lists)

NOTE: CPU will summon police / other emergency services as required. 

CPU is not equipped/qualified to transport injured/ill staff or students to hospital.
